View Video Tribute View Funeral Webcast Wilma Jean Taylor Sowell, 91, died Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 3:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Reverend Lee Stevenson officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 1:00 P.M. until service time at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to Rose Hill Cemetery, P.O. Box 1015, Columbia, TN 38402. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born July 24, 1931 in Maury County, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Tildon Taylor and the late Christine Godwin Taylor. She was a 1949 graduate of Columbia Central High School and took several courses at Columbia State Community College. On November 26, 1950, she married Joe Schiel Sowell who preceded her in death May 26, 1987 from ALS. Wilma and Joe started their own business, Weddings by Sowell, where they served the South Central Tennessee Area. Mrs. Sowell also wrote a cookbook, Parties and Pleasures. She was a former member of James K. Polk Memorial Association, Maury County Arts Guild, Maury County Chamber of Commerce, appointed to Convention and Visitors Advisory Board, Maury County Historical Society, and APTA. She and her family were founders of the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Central Tennessee Chapter. Mrs. Sowell was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church, where she was the wedding coordinator for several years. Survivors include her son, Joe Tom (Regina) Sowell of Calhoun, Georgia; daughter, Pam (James) Gary of Thompson Station; grandsons, Ross (Elizabeth) Sowell, Joe Spencer Gary; granddaughter, Chloe Marilynn Sowell; great grandsons, Benjamin Sowell, Elliott Sowell; step grandchildren, Amanda (Jason) Evans, Chris (Annie) Powell, Matthew Powell; step great grandchildren, Hudson Powell, Tucker Powell, Hadley Evans, Hayden Evans; niece, Ginger Dickens; nephew, Dee Taylor; great niece, Grace (Matt) Dunn, and several other relatives. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Donald Taylor, Sr. Active pallbearers will be Ross Sowell, Joe Spencer Gary, Tony Sowell, John Michael Sowell, Matt Powell, Jason Evans, Chris Powell, Bill Ammons, and David Taylor. Honorary pallbearers include members of Ayers-Whitney Sunday School Class and members of Central High School Class of 1949.
