Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Graymere Church of Christ with John Vaughan and Andrew Phillips officiating. Private burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The Nashville native was the son of Peggy Smith Rector of Columbia and the late Ponder C. Rector. He was a graduate of Columbia Central High School, Freed Hardeman University, Memphis State University and received his dental degree from West Virginia University Dental School. He was an avid cyclist. Dr. Rector was an active member of Graymere Church of Christ where he served as a Deacon, taught Bible classes, participated in many youth activities and was involved in Tuesday Morning Bible class. Survivors include his wife, Susan Byrd Rector of Columbia, whom he married September 19, 1980; sons, Evan (Catherine) Rector of Brentwood, Alex (Emily) Rector of Brentwood; mother, Peggy Smith Rector of Columbia; sister, Mrs. Paula (J.W.) Gilliam of Columbia; brothers, Phil (Charlotte) Rector, Keith (Cindy) Rector, Lynn (Angie) Rector all of Columbia; granddaughter, Corinne "Cori" Laray Rector; mother-in-law, Sue Byrd of Columbia; nieces and nephews, Amber (Nathan) Owens, Tara (Austin) Simmons, Dalton Rector; sister-in-law, Karen (Ricky) Thompson; several nieces and nephews; and several great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Ponder C. Rector and father-in-law, Leonard W. "L.W." Byrd. Active pallbearers will be Chris Webb, Darren Dykes, Ricky Thompson, Lynn Rector, Phil Rector, Keith Rector, Charlie McCary, and Dr. Dwayne Fulks.
